About English and Surf in Cornwall

Learn English and Surf

Below you can read more about this surf accommodation. See the pictures on the right for an impression.

Learn English and Surf

  • Newquay, Cornwall: due to its location on the Atlantic Ocean, the Cornwall region is seen as the UK’s surfing capital, especially given the large number of surf beaches and surf shops. Newquay beach is the site where, at the beginning of the last century, the first waves were surfed in the UK. In addition, there is much more to do in Cornwall, such as exploring the beautiful nature, annual festivals and typical British (but local) conviviality.
  • United Kingdom: Many see the UK as the place where one speaks the most beautiful English worldwide. How special is it that this is just around the corner from us. Luckily it is also an ideal country to spend several weeks. Get involved in English pub culture, enjoy British gastronomy and hospitality and meet people from all over the world.

De taalschool

  • About the language school: the language school in Newquay is run by 2 friends and the atmosphere is therfore very personal. Toby and Alex are both present daily at the language school, creating a very informal atmosphere. The lessons are very good quality, with fun being paramount. This is a fun combination, which makes learning a lot easier.
  • Start dates: you can basically arrive every day. The weekend is recommended but is not mandatory. In July and August the arrival is mandatory on Saturdays.

The language lessons & language levels

  • English lesson: per day you will take 3 hours of English lessons, at your level. The focus is mainly on speaking, where grammar, reading and writing will certainly emerge as key pints of focus. So you will therefore build a beautiful and complete knowledge of the English language.
  • English and Surf: You can combine English lessons with surfing. In addition to the 15 hours of English lessons you will also work on your English while surfing, the ideal combination. You get surf lessons from Alex, who has had experience in giving surf lessons for over 15 years.
  • Level: This language school can be visited by every level. On arrival, you will take a test to determine your level. The teacher always ensures that you take lessons that fit your level.

The guests

  • The students: where Newquay is particularly known for surfing, it is a place that attracts language students from all over the world. Imagine yourself in a very international company during a few weeks and learn about the background and cultures of your new friends.
    • Curious about other people’s experiences? Then read how our student Storm enjoyed  her time during his English and Surf course in Cornwall.

Surfing, activities, meals and transport

Below you can read more about this surf accommodation. See the pictures on the right below for an impression.

  • Host family: the language school has selected a number of host families where the students reside. These families are very passionate about immersing you in local culture. It’s not unusual for you to go on an adventure with your family to discover the beautiful landscapes of Cornwall. The family stay is ideal for working on your English, especially during breakfast and dinner, you will get all the opportunities you need to practice. Here too, as with surfing, you hardly notice that it is about improving your English, given the fun and conviviality that a family brings with it.
  • Almost all families are within walking distance of the school, but if it is not, the family will make sure you get where you need to be. This dynamic also ensures a lot of involvement of the families, resulting in very good contact with the school.

Surf lessons

  • Surfing in Cornwall: surfing in Cornwall is a great experience. Due to its location on the open Atlantic, there are a large number of surf spots in the region, all of which are suitable for surfers at different levels. To practice this sport, you will of course remain dependent on the circumstances. If it doesn’t turn out to be possible to surf, there are plenty of other activities you’ll do, along with the others in the group. For more information, see the Activities tab.
  • Surf lesson: what is unique about the experience in Newquay is that you get the surf lessons from Alex, one of the 2 owners of the language school. He has over 15 years of experience in teaching surf lessons. He also ensures that you also improve your English during surfing, without knowing. What’s more fun than learning to combine a language with a sport and a good time. After all, this is the best way to learn.
  • Material: outside the surf lessons, you can certainly free surf. The surf school also rents surfboards and can give you a good deal (as you are a student of the language school).

Surf conditions

  • The surf lessons are given at different levels. The surf instructors will make sure you get lessons at your level, even if you’ve never surfed you’ll learn this soon.

During your stay at the school in Newquay you will do many activities. Together with the other students, the language school will determine which activities will be on the programme. Below are some examples of activities that can be done.

  • Adventure: Cornwall is known for the abundant options to go out on an adventure. Think of rock climbing, jumping off rocks and much more.
  • Culture: Explore and visit the beautiful villages and towns nearby. Think of the beautiful St. Agnes or Mithian, places that are well worth a visit. Also discover deserted beaches, the old ports or the beautiful amphitheater on top of the rocks.
  • Other activities:  There is still plenty to do, from beach games to SUV’s. The school is doing everything it can to offer you the time of your life, with trips to nearby places and much more. Many activities are free of charge, other activities are optional.

  • You can fly to Cornwall airport or Exeter airport. From there you can be picked up. It is also possible to fly to London or Bristol, from where you can catch a train or bus.
  • If you have the opportunity to come to Cornwall by car, that is definitely recommended. The area is fantastic and having a car makes discovering a lot easier.
